Wimbledon comes to Perran Tennis!

Perran Tennis members Rob Pippin and Chris Legg hatched a plan several months ago to bring a taste of Wimbledon to the club. This Saturday the middle Saturday of the championships saw Perran Tennis host a Wimbledon party.

Groundsman Mike Payne was hard at work in the morning putting up bunting and fine tuning the two televisions for live coverage during the event.

The day’s proceedings began early with club members Lisa Pippin and Alison Luck preparing food and refreshments for players and spectators alike.

At 10am play commenced with twenty-four juniors embarking on seven rounds of grass court doubles. Thirty spectators enjoyed the spectacle which culminated in a final composing of the top scoring two girls and two boys. During the final Lisa Pippin and Alison Legg together with their band of helpers served the crowd with cakes, sandwiches, drinks followed by strawberries and cream.
An exciting final ensued between Samuel Legg partnered by Martha Marney against Matt Legg and Laura James. Samuel and Martha proved worthy winners. Medal were then presented by Rob Pippin and Steve Luck.

In less than thirty minutes the juniors left and the adults arrived for their Wimbledon experience. Once again twenty-four competitors took to the six grass courts and sampled great weather and very attractive doubles play. The numerous spectators were treated to some exciting matches live and on the big screen. It is still unclear as to whether the departure of Djokovic of resulting final at Perran caused the biggest stir!

Hard at work in the pavilion Lisa Pippin was joined by Alison Luck. Following the completion of seven rounds of doubles Pimms were served together with a sumptuous spread including sandwiches, cakes, scones, strawberries and cream. The final was most exciting, seeing familiar faces and not so familiar ones. Chris Legg being the top scoring man teamed up with June Fallow, whilst Alison Legg the top scoring lady partnered Richard Seddon. In a very close encounter Chris and June came through to become Perran Tennis first Wimbledon winners!

Perran Tennis were very pleased and fortunate to receive support from A. E. Rodda and Son in gifting their iconic cream for the event. It is always nice to link a famous Cornish product with grass court tennis at Perran.

Following the final the grand raffle was drawn amongst the prizes were two superb rackets, which lucky members – Spike Gaisford and Joe Baker joyously received.

The whole day was wrapped up by Club President Dave Pell who gave a vote of thanks after presenting the medals.
