Junior Tennis in Perranporth: Camps, Coaching and a Summer to Remember

It’s been a special year for junior tennis at Perran Tennis Club. Our junior section has grown, with many of this season’s new members joining as juniors, and our young players have been making their mark both at the club and well beyond Cornwall.

From Perranporth to Wimbledon

Junior member Evan Fleet earned a place in the Road to Wimbledon Under-14 competition this summer, representing Cornwall at Wimbledon itself. From a field of 48 players, Evan battled through to the last 16, showing real determination, resilience and some brilliant tennis along the way.

Before he set off, Chairman Phil presented Evan with a £50 contribution from the club towards the competition. We’re all very proud of him.

It capped a strong year for Perran juniors. Earlier in the season, Evan and Ollie were part of the Cornwall team that won the U14 County Cup, beating Devon, Somerset, Wiltshire and the Channel Islands.

Perran Junior Doubles Competition

In June, 16 young players from across Cornwall took part in our Junior Doubles Competition, organised by Anita. The format is a little different from most tournaments: players don’t need to enter with a partner, because partners rotate every round. That means everyone plays with and against lots of different people. The competition is for 11 to 16-year-olds who can serve consistently and hold a rally, and it’s played on both our hard and grass courts.

Congratulations to our winners, Una and Evan. One member who came along to watch described the afternoon as “magical”, pointing to the sportsmanship, friendliness and kindness every player showed.

Tennis in local schools

In July we welcomed children from Perranporth Primary School and Penair Secondary School to the club. We provided free court access and support as part of our commitment to getting more young people playing tennis.
