Perran Juniors Doubles Tournament Report – Sunday 22nd July 2025

The much-anticipated Perran Juniors Doubles Tournament took place on Sunday 22nd July at Perranporth, offering a fantastic day of tennis, camaraderie, and fun for young players from across Cornwall. Despite a damp and rainy start during the setup, the weather soon cleared to reveal blue skies and perfect playing conditions, setting the tone for a memorable day of sport.

A Unique Format

What makes the Perran Juniors Doubles Tournament stand out is its rotating partner format, where players team up with a different partner each round. With the pairings pre-drawn, the children could focus on their game without the need to find their own partners. This format encouraged new friendships, teamwork, and a healthy competitive spirit. It was also a great opportunity for mixed play, with a balanced turnout of boys and girls participating.

A Strong Turnout

This year, 24 players took part, ranging from county-level athletes to enthusiastic club players. For some, it was their first ever tournament, and many left the day feeling inspired to begin competing more regularly. The inclusive and encouraging atmosphere made it an ideal event for players of all levels.

The Lucky Dip Round

New for 2025, Round 3 introduced a ‘Lucky Dip’ twist, with pairings drawn randomly by Rachel Smith, Vice Chair and Safeguarding Lead of Cornwall Tennis. This round was held on grass courts, and with all six courts in action, the matches provided some of the most thrilling tennis of the day.

Players earned points for every match they won throughout the day, and the top four scorers advanced to the finals.

The Final Showdown

The finalists were Ethan, Raffa, Jacks, and Ben. After a tense and exciting match, it was Jack and Ben who emerged victorious, claiming the title of Perran Junior Doubles Champions 2025.

A Community Effort

The success of the tournament was due in large part to the dedicated team of organisers and volunteers. Anita Fleet led the event with tremendous enthusiasm, supported by Steve Luck, June Fallow and Jon & Sarah Mallet. Court supervisors were present on each court to help players with scoring and to ensure the matches ran smoothly.

The day was topped off with delicious homemade cakes and a warm, friendly atmosphere that made players and families feel truly welcome.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part, supported, and helped make the day such a success. The Perran Juniors Doubles Tournament continues to grow as a highlight on the junior tennis calendar and is a brilliant example of sport bringing young people together in the spirit of fun, competition, and community.
