Three Titles for the Marneys
The Marney family swept the board at the recently held Junior Club Championships at Perran Tennis. Martha taking the Girl’s 16’s title, whilst brothers William and Vince became 10 and Under and 8 and Under champions respectively. It was fifth time lucky for Harry Lampier who became the new Boy’s 16’s winner. Erin Hoskings was successful in taking two titles the Girls 8 and Under together with the 10’s.
For the very first time the 8 and Under Cup for girls was presented by Club President Dave Pell. The competition was so close that only a single point separated the four competitors in the round-robin stage. In their very first competition Bryher Todd and Elise Holland narrowly missed out on a place in the final. In a well fought match Erin Hoskings narrowly beat her sister Nieve 10.8.
The boy’s competition was equally enthralling placing Ben Perry third, setting up a final between last year’s winner Ethan Chapman and Vince Marney. Vince ran out the winner 7.1.
In winning the 8’s Vince qualified to play in the 10 and Under section here he faced his brother William, Tom Dingle and the vastly improved Joe Baker. It was William’s day defeating his brother Vince, following a play-off against Tom. In the girl’s 10’s it was the Hoskings sisters left to battle it out, Erin just pipping Nieve to the title.
Under 16s
The Under 16 events had a strong entry in both the girls and boys. Each player competed in six rounds of round robin play. The girl’s semi-finals threw up interesting matches with Martha Marney defeating Maddie Pippin and Lucinda Hawkens proving too strong for Laura James. The boy’s semi-finals saw new player to tournament play Morgan Stephens in action against Archie Mallett and Matt Walker take on the experienced Harry Lampier. At the culmination of these matches it was clear there was going to be a quality final. In the third/fourth play-off Matt Walker took third spot with a 3.1 win over Morgan. Similarly, Laura won by the same score against Maddie to take third place.
The Perran Tennis Junior Champions for 2016 were presented with their trophies by Dave Pell after two quite stunning finals. Harry beat Archie with great shot and point construction from both players. Martha pressed hard against a resilient Lucinda eventually winning by the same score 3.1.
Next week it is the turn of the adult members to take to the courts. The entry is already looking stronger than last year.
