Perran Tennis Centenary Cup
Perran Tennis Centenary Cup
Perranporth Lawn Tennis Club as it was known then began life in 1896 and in 1996 the centenary mixed doubles cup was contested for the first time. After 1997 it was not played for again until 2011. It is now firmly placed in the Perran Tennis calendar!
Twenty four players gathered on the hard courts for this the first tournament of many for the season. The weather was wonderful and as the grounds man worked on the grass courts play was under way on the hard. Each player competed in five rounds of mixed doubles with various partners. After the final round the highest scoring man – Chris Legg was to partner the second highest scoring lady in the final. However Susan Hart had to withdraw which left Kate Coles and Spike Hudson in a tie-break play-off which Kate won eventually by 7.2. So Kate and Chris were through to play the highest scoring lady – Sheona Burns and the second highest scoring man – Stephen Hawken.
The final produced some fine tennis and resulted in the match being tied, so a tie-break ensued. Again closely contested with Stephen and Sheona winning 7.5. Thanks go to Alison luck and Susan Hart for laying on the refreshments.
