How Social Tennis Works at Perran Tennis Club, Perranporth

One of the questions we’re asked most by new members is “How do I find people to play with?” The good news is that at Perran Tennis Club there are lots of ways to get a game, whatever your standard. Here’s how it all works.

Club sessions: just turn up and play

Club sessions are the heart of the club. They’re free for members, and the club covers the cost of the balls and the winter floodlights. You don’t need to book or bring a partner. Just come along and you’ll be mixed into doubles games with other members.

Adult club sessions run on:

  • Wednesday afternoons, 1pm to 5pm
  • Wednesday evenings, 6pm to 7.30pm
  • Friday evenings, 5.30pm to 7pm (beginner-friendly)
  • Saturday afternoons, 2pm to 5pm

Club sessions work best once you can serve and hold a rally. If you’re still learning, Friday evenings are beginner-friendly and open to newer players.

Sessions are busy and sociable. On one sunny Saturday afternoon in June, seven of our nine courts were in use at once. If you’ve just finished a coaching course, club sessions are the natural next step. They’re a great way to meet people and keep improving.

Box leagues: regular matches at your level

If you’d like more structured match play, our singles and doubles box leagues are a friendly way to get it. Players are grouped into boxes and move up or down a box depending on results. It’s a good way to play lots of different people and gain match experience. Rich Walter runs the leagues, so call him on 07851 689436 or email contact@perrantennis.co.uk if you’d like to join the next round.

Team tennis: playing for Perran

Perran Tennis Club enters men’s and ladies’ teams in the summer leagues, playing against other clubs around Cornwall. It’s been a good summer. Our Men’s A team was top of their league by the end of May, Perran 2 beat Penzance 9–2, and our ladies’ teams have recorded some impressive wins.

New players are always welcome, whether you’re an experienced player or looking to develop your competitive game.

  • Men practise together on Monday evenings. Contact Pete Williams on 07737 607074.
  • Ladies meet on Thursdays, with coaching from Matt at £7 a session. It’s open to ladies of all abilities, and new members are especially encouraged to come along. Message Matt on 07833 115667 to join the ladies’ WhatsApp group.

Booking a court yourself

If you’d rather arrange your own game, members can book courts for free in the ClubSpark Booker app, and can bring guests from £5. Our members’ Facebook group is also a handy place to find someone to play with.

New to tennis?

If you’re a beginner or coming back after a long break, Matt’s adult Beginners and Improvers courses are the perfect place to start. Nearly 30 players took part in his Tuesday evening courses in June alone.
